Stand Up to Cancer

19/10/2012 | By Sharmila Chauhan
Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK have joined forces to launch Stand Up To Cancer. The campaign hopes to raise awareness of cancer and help generate funds and includes a series of special programs and events such as the Stand of Fame.

Proceeds raised through the Stand Up To Cancer campaign will go towards research institutes to help to ensure that new treatments get to patients faster. The campaign has already been run successfully in the US and 20 per cent of funds raised will support across the pond collaborations bringing  state-of-the-art treatments to the UK.

The Stand of Fame has been inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame. and allows the public to try on the shoes of famous celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ralph Fiennes, Maria Sharapova, Sir Chris Hoy, Dame Helen Mirren, Coleen Rooney, Wayne Rooney, Alexandra Burke and even Keith Lemon.

The ‘star-studded’ 70 feet, the arrow-shaped 'catwalk' has been set up in London’s Leicester Square and will also be attended by a number of cancer survivors including single mum Seema Sharma, 35, who bravely battled breast cancer, and father-of-two Adam Hart, 32, a stand up comedian who recently beat testicular cancer.

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said:  “Through Stand Up to Cancer, we hope to raise millions of pounds for our lifesaving work.  I’m absolutely thrilled that Stand Up to Cancer has become a reality in the UK. All the funds raised through Stand Up to Cancer will go towards research specifically designed to have an impact within just a few years, by working to turn breakthroughs in the lab to breakthroughs in our hospitals.”

The event will support the live public event which will be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight.
