Family Health Insurance FAQs

What is family health insurance?

Family health insurance is a health insurance policy that protects you and your immediate family members against expensive private medical bills. With family health insurance, you, your partner and your children can get access to private treatment while the provider will pay a part or all of your hospital bills. If you’re new to health insurance, find out more about how it works and its benefits.

Which family members can I cover under family health insurance?

Family health insurance can cover you, your partner and your dependents. With Freedom Health Insurance, your children are insured under your policy until their 25th birthday. Family policies with three or fewer children will only pay for their first child. For our larger families, rest assured that the maximum charge is capped at four children.

On the other hand, a family health insurance policy can’t cover any other family members such as siblings, parents or grandparents.

What are the benefits of family health insurance?

Health insurance can benefit your family in multiple ways:

  • Providing a financial safety net in case of expensive medical bills. What health insurance covers depends on your policy.
  • Offering peace of mind that your family can get private care in case of unexpected illness or injuries.
  • Helping you access private healthcare in comfortable and modern facilities.
  • Getting more control over your healthcare because with health insurance, you can often choose your hospital, doctor and the time of your appointments.

How much does family health insurance cost?

The cost of family health insurance depends on the cover your policy provides, with more comprehensive covers being more expensive. Another important factor in the price of your family health insurance is the age of its members. The older the family members are, the more you will typically pay for family health insurance.

Your premium can also rise when adding new members to your policy such as children. With Freedom Health Insurance, family policies with three or fewer children will only pay for their first child. For our larger families, the maximum charge is capped at four children.

How does family health insurance work?

With family health insurance, you, your partner and children are insured under the same health insurance policy which means you pay one premium and you can manage the policy on behalf of your family. When one of the members needs medical care, they usually have to visit the GP then contact the health insurance company to start a claim. After the claim has been approved, we pay the hospital directly or send you a refund.
