If you are already covered, your full policy wording is in the Freedom Health Insurance Claims Portal (opens in a new tab).

The area of cover is confirmed on the certificate of insurance. Cover also depends on the underwriter being legally permitted to provide private medical insurance where you live.

Emergency medical treatment outside your selected area of cover is available under Gold, Platinum and Diamond only, subject to the applicable benefit limits and policy conditions. It is not available on Silver or Bronze. Only treatment starting within 24 hours of the emergency is covered. You should contact us for authorisation as soon as reasonably practicable.

About these figures. Figures are from the Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA table of benefits, in the currency of the policy. Limits apply to each insured person in each policy year, unless stated otherwise. The benefits for chronic conditions and terminal illness have lifetime limits. Routine maternity is for female members aged 18 to 44, from 11 months after the policy starts. Medical evacuation means transport to the nearest appropriate medical centre when suitable treatment is not available locally. Repatriation means returning the remains of an insured person who dies to the country of burial. See the Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA table of benefits
Pre-authorisation. Inpatient treatment means you are admitted to hospital and stay overnight. Daypatient treatment means you are admitted for the day but do not stay overnight. Inpatient and daypatient treatment, and claims under the medical evacuation and repatriation benefit, require pre-authorisation. This means getting our agreement before treatment starts. Without it, we pay 50% of the costs incurred. Most outpatient treatment does not require pre-authorisation, although some treatments must be agreed with us in advance. Where pre-authorisation is not required, you would normally pay the provider and claim reimbursement of eligible costs. Claims must be sent to us within six months, or we may not accept them.
How chronic conditions, cancer and terminal illness are covered.
  • Chronic conditions. A chronic condition is one that needs long-term monitoring or control of symptoms, or continues indefinitely. An acute episode, where a condition becomes unstable, is covered under the usual benefits. Treatment that maintains or monitors a chronic condition, or relieves its symptoms, has its own lifetime limit. Bronze has no cover for this.
  • Cancer. Treatment aimed at a cure is covered in full at every level, including Bronze. After that, cover moves to the chronic conditions benefit, or to the terminal illness benefit where the cancer is terminal. Both benefits have lifetime limits and are not included on Bronze.
  • Terminal illness. Palliative care, which relieves symptoms rather than aiming to cure, and end-of-life care are covered up to a lifetime limit. Bronze has no cover for this.

Excess and payment

Your excess, policy currency and payment options

These details are for individual policies. For a group scheme, the premium, any excess and the payment arrangements are agreed when the scheme is arranged.

A voluntary excess

50 to 5,000

An optional amount you are responsible for before we make a payment. It applies to each insured person in each policy year, in the policy’s currency, and can reduce your premium.

The currency

Euros, pounds or US dollars

Your policy, premiums, benefits and limits are all in the same currency.

How you pay

Yearly, quarterly or monthly

Yearly and monthly payments can be made by credit or debit card, bank transfer, Direct Debit or SEPA Direct Debit. Direct Debit is for sterling policies paid from a UK bank account. SEPA Direct Debit is for euro policies paid from a bank account in the SEPA zone. Quarterly payments can be made by credit or debit card or bank transfer.

Renewal and premiums. Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA is an annual contract. Renewal is at our discretion and subject to our acceptance. Premiums are normally reviewed each year and may be affected by factors including age, claims experience and medical inflation.

Eligibility

Who can be covered

Individual policies

  • Adults aged 18 to 70 at the start of the policy.
  • Children from birth up to age 20 at the start of the policy. A child can stay on the policy until the renewal date after their 21st birthday. If they are in full-time education, this extends to the renewal date after their 24th birthday.
  • You can include an eligible partner, eligible children, or both.

Group schemes

  • Adults aged 18 to 70 at the start of the policy.
  • Children from birth up to age 20 at the start of the policy. A child can stay on the policy until the renewal date after their 21st birthday. If they are in full-time education, this extends to the renewal date after their 24th birthday.

Conditions that apply to everyone covered

  • Everyone covered must have a principal country of residence outside the EEA. This is the country where they live for more than six months of the year. They must tell us if it changes.
  • Available only where the underwriter is legally permitted to provide private medical insurance. Not available to citizens of the USA living in the USA, or to people subject to exchange controls. Not available where buying the policy is illegal under local law.
  • It is the policyholder’s responsibility to check that the cover is legally appropriate where they live, including any local compulsory health insurance rules.
  • A policy with worldwide cover will be cancelled if an insured US citizen spends more than 180 continuous days in the USA.
  • Some occupations are not eligible for Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA. All applications are subject to our current acceptance criteria.

Important to know

What is not covered

Pre-existing conditions are not covered as standard. How they are assessed depends on the underwriting method.

How this is decided

How pre-existing conditions are assessed

A pre-existing condition is one for which you experienced symptoms or received medication, advice or treatment in the two years before cover started. These are generally not covered unless we agree otherwise. Underwriting is how we decide which medical conditions a policy will and will not cover when it starts. The method that applies is shown on the certificate of insurance, along with any exclusion we have applied.

Full medical underwriting

When you apply, you answer health questions for each person to be covered under the policy. We review your answers and may ask your medical practitioner for more information before deciding what cover we can offer. Pre-existing conditions that may need treatment in the future, and any related conditions, are usually excluded. Any exclusion is shown on the certificate of insurance. It is essential that the information you give is complete and accurate, including symptoms that have not been diagnosed. Otherwise a claim may not be paid, or the policy may be cancelled.

Moratorium underwriting

You do not answer health questions when you apply. Any condition, or related condition, that you had symptoms of, or advice, treatment or medication for, in the two years before cover started is excluded. It may be considered for cover once you have completed a continuous two-year period after the policy starts. During that period you must have no symptoms, advice, treatment, medication or special diet for it.

Moving from another insurer

If you already have private medical insurance and want to transfer, we may be able to offer terms that take account of your existing cover. Your broker or adviser can tell you more.

Group schemes

Eligible group schemes may be offered medical history disregarded, where we do not apply personal medical exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Whether it applies is agreed when the scheme is arranged.

Summary of the key exclusions

This is not a full list of exclusions. Some exclusions have exceptions or depend on the level of cover. The full list is in chapter 8 of the policy document. If you are already covered, you can find it in the Freedom Health Insurance Claims Portal (opens in a new tab). If not, your broker or adviser can give you a copy.

  • Pre-existing conditions, as above
  • Preventative treatment or procedures
  • Treatment or diagnostic tests for injuries from taking part in professional sports
  • Treatment outside the area of cover shown on your certificate of insurance, apart from emergency treatment on Gold, Platinum and Diamond, as above
  • Treatment without a referral from a medical practitioner
  • Treatment or drug therapy that, in our reasonable opinion, is experimental or unproven, based on generally accepted medical practice where it is provided
Who provides the cover, and your protections. Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA is underwritten by Anahita Insurance Corporation, which is licensed by the Financial Services Commission in Barbados. It is not regulated in the United Kingdom. Freedom Health Insurance administers the policy, handles claims and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Different protections therefore apply to different parts of your cover. If you are unhappy with anything Freedom Health Insurance has done, including a decision on a claim, you can complain to us. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Where a complaint concerns the insurer rather than Freedom Health Insurance, it is dealt with under the rules of the Financial Services Commission in Barbados. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers Freedom Health Insurance and does not cover the insurer.
