Frequently asked questions
Individuals and families FAQs
Answers for anyone thinking about health insurance for themselves or their family. We explain how cover works, what affects the cost and how to apply.
How cover works
What is the difference between outpatient, daypatient and inpatient treatment?
An outpatient attends a hospital, consulting room or clinic but is not admitted. A daypatient is admitted to hospital for a period of medically supervised recovery but does not stay overnight. An inpatient is admitted and stays in a hospital bed overnight or longer.
Which family members can I cover on my policy?
You can cover yourself, your partner and your children, including adopted children, who live at the same address. The age children can stay on your policy depends on the plan. Read up to what age can my children stay on my policy.
How does health insurance work for a family?
You, your partner and your children are covered under one policy, with one premium. If someone needs treatment, they usually see their GP first and then contact us to start a claim. Once we have approved it, we pay the hospital directly or pay the policyholder back.
Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Conditions you had before your cover started are usually not covered. How far back we look depends on the product: five years for Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials, and two years for Freedom Worldwide. Underwriting is how we assess your medical history, and the method that applies is shown on your certificate of insurance. With moratorium underwriting, a condition may become eligible after a continuous two-year period, after your policy starts, without symptoms, treatment or advice. Read more about chronic and pre-existing conditions.
Do you cover chronic conditions?
Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials do not cover ongoing treatment and monitoring of a chronic condition. Short-term treatment of a sudden and unexpected acute flare-up may be covered. On Freedom Elite, the chronic conditions exclusion is not applied to claims for cancer treatment.
Freedom Worldwide includes some cover for chronic conditions, within limits that depend on the arrangement and the level of cover. The Freedom Worldwide page explains more. For Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials, read about chronic and pre-existing conditions.
Am I covered for cancer?
Freedom Elite includes cancer cover as part of its core cover, subject to the policy terms. Freedom Worldwide covers treatment aimed at curing cancer in full on every level, and cover for ongoing and palliative cancer care depends on the arrangement and level. Freedom Essentials does not cover the cost of cancer treatment. It pays a cancer cash benefit instead.
Full details are in your Guide to Cover or policy document, which you can find in the Freedom Health Insurance Claims Portal (opens in a new tab).
Do you cover pregnancy?
It depends on your plan.
Freedom Elite: routine pregnancy and childbirth are not covered. Listed pregnancy complications are covered, and a maternity cash benefit of £150 per child is paid once you have had cover for at least 10 months.
Freedom Essentials: routine pregnancy and childbirth are not covered. A fixed cash benefit is paid for listed pregnancy complications. The maternity cash benefit is only available with the optional outpatient cover.
Freedom Worldwide: maternity cover is included on the Diamond, Platinum and Gold levels, after a waiting period. Cover for pregnancy complications depends on the level.
Full details are in your Guide to Cover or policy document, which you can find in the Freedom Health Insurance Claims Portal. (opens in a new tab)
Do you cover emergency treatment?
Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials do not cover accident and emergency treatment. Once you are stable, contact us, as we may be able to cover further treatment.
Freedom Worldwide covers emergency admissions to hospital. Depending on your cover level, it can also cover emergency treatment outside your area of cover.
Do you cover health checks?
Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials do not cover health checks. Freedom Worldwide UK includes routine health checks on every level, after a 12-month waiting period. Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA includes them on Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. The limits depend on the level.
Do I still need travel insurance if I have health insurance?
Yes, usually. Travel insurance covers things like cancelled flights, lost belongings and emergency treatment on a short trip abroad. UK health insurance does not cover these, and Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials do not cover treatment abroad.
Freedom Worldwide is international private medical insurance. It is an annual contract, not travel insurance, and it does not cover trip costs such as cancellations or lost luggage.
What is the difference between health insurance and life insurance?
They are different products. Life insurance pays a cash sum to your loved ones if you die during the policy term. Health insurance covers the cost of treating acute conditions that start after your policy begins.
Cost
What affects the cost of health insurance?
The price depends on how many people are covered, their ages, the cover you choose and any options you add, such as your excess or whether you pay monthly or annually. Read more about how much health insurance costs.
How are children charged on a family policy?
On Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials, a family with three or fewer children pays only for the first child. For larger families, the charge is capped at four children.
How can I reduce the cost of my policy?
There are three main ways. On Freedom Elite, paying annually rather than monthly saves 6% of your premium. Adding a voluntary excess can reduce your premium. An excess is the amount you pay towards a claim. You can also choose only the optional benefits you need.
Applying
Are there age limits for taking out a policy?
You need to be between 18 and 70 when your policy starts.
Can I take out a policy for less than 12 months?
No. All our policies are annual, so we do not offer cover for less than 12 months.
Can I switch to Freedom Health Insurance from another insurer?
Yes. Call us on 01202 756 350, or speak to your broker if you have one, and we will talk you through switching.
Can I get cover if I am leaving my company scheme?
Yes. If you are leaving a Freedom Health Insurance group scheme, you can transfer to an individual policy on the same terms. This means conditions you have claimed for can stay covered.
