Alternative therapies can be used in managing certain conditions. Some people might have doubts regarding the effectiveness of some alternative therapies, nevertheless, many people do find them helpful in managing their condition.

Here at Freedom Health Insurance, we understand different things can work for different people when it comes to receiving health care. Alternative therapies could offer another avenue for getting the help you need to feel better, both physically and mentally, therefore we offer alternative therapy cover as an optional benefit to our Freedom Elite policy.

What we will cover

By adding our optional Alternative Therapies cover to your Freedom Elite policy, you can benefit from cover for the following alternative therapies when referred by a GP or medical specialist:

  • Acupuncture
  • Osteopathy
  • Chiropractic
  • Podiatry
  • Homoeopathy

You can choose your Alternative Therapies cover limit from these two options:

  • £750
  • £1500

If the treatment is referred by your GP, we will pay for a maximum of six sessions during a policy year for all the listed therapies combined up to the level of cover chosen. If it is specialist referral, the six session limit does not apply. The therapist you see for treatment must be a member of or registered with their relevant professional body. For more information about our Alternative Therapies cover, please refer to the Elite Policyholder’s Guide to Cover (page 19).

What we will not cover

  • Treatment provided by a medical provider who is not recognised by us or who is not registered with the relevant governing and regulatory body.
  • Alternative or complementary therapy products or preparations which include (but are not limited to) homoeopathic remedies or substances.
  • Any more than six session of all the listed alternative therapies combined on GP referral.
  • Any treatment that exceeds your cover limit

Please note: To benefit from the Alternative Therapies cover, you must add this option to your Freedom Elite policy at the start of your cover. It is not part of the Elite core cover. Depending on your circumstances, you might also be able to add Alternative Therapies to your policy at renewal. If your policy includes Alternative Therapies cover, it will be shown on your certificate.

For more information on what is and what is not included in our Alternative Therapies health insurance option, please see our Freedom Elite Policyholder’s Guide. If anything is unclear or if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Benefits of Alternative Therapies cover

By adding Alternative Therapies as an additional cover to your Freedom Elite policy, you can:

  • Get financial cover for acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, podiatry and homoeopathy which could be costly to pay for yourself.
  • Access private healthcare facilities and spend less time waiting to receive your treatment compared to treatments offered by the NHS which often have long waiting lists.
  • Feel more in control of your healthcare and have the option to receive alterative treatment.
  • Focus on your general health and wellbeing as alternative therapies are considered a more holistic approach to managing a condition.

FAQs

What are alternative therapies?

Alternative therapies are treatments which are used instead of traditional/mainstream medical treatment. Examples of alternative therapies include homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic.

What is the difference between complementary and alternative therapies?

Sometimes the terms “complementary” and “alternative” therapies are used interchangeably, but they are slightly different, depending on how the treatment is used. Complementary therapies are used alongside other traditional or mainstream treatments, whereas alternative therapies are used instead of these treatments.

Can I use the Alternative Therapies option to cover a pre-existing condition?

Private medical insurance is not designed to cover medical conditions which you had before the start date of your policy. You may however be able to cover some conditions provided you have not received medical advice, treatment or medication or experienced symptoms for a certain period after your policy start date.

Does the NHS offer alternative therapies?

Alternative therapies are not commonly available on the NHS, although some NHS GPs might still recommend alternative therapies as part of your treatment.

Can I add Alternative Therapies health insurance cover as an existing customer?

Depending on your circumstances, you could be able to add Alternative Therapies cover to your policy at the time of renewal. However, you cannot add any of our optional benefits such as Alternative Therapies or Mental Health cover to your policy during your term.
