About this optional benefit
Freedom Elite offers optional mental health cover to help with the investigation and treatment of acute mental or psychiatric illnesses, including eligible mental, nervous and eating disorders.
The cover provides access to private psychiatric specialists and hospital treatment, subject to the terms and limits of your policy.

What we will cover
Freedom Elite mental health cover
An acute mental illness is one which is clinically significant and causes present distress or substantially affects your ability to function in important parts of everyday life. This could include work, education or relationships.
The cover is intended to help with the investigation and treatment of an acute illness, rather than provide ongoing support for the general management of mental health and wellbeing. Treatment must be provided by, or under the supervision of, a psychiatric specialist following a referral from your GP.
If your Freedom Elite policy includes mental health cover, the following benefits apply, subject to your policy terms and limits:
- Outpatient treatment, up to £2,000Psychiatric specialist and hospital fees for eligible outpatient treatment.
- Inpatient and daypatient treatment, in full for up to 45 daysPsychiatric specialist and hospital fees for eligible inpatient and daypatient treatment.

What we will not cover
Clear about the limits
The main exclusions and limits are:
- Addiction and substance misuseTreatment of alcohol, solvent or drug abuse, or addictions of any kind, or conditions arising from them.
- Expected responses to life eventsEmotional distress which is an expected response to a life event, such as bereavement or relationship difficulties, is not, by itself, necessarily an acute mental illness covered by the policy.
- Pre-existing conditionsPre-existing mental health conditions may be excluded, depending on the underwriting terms that apply to your policy. This includes conditions which existed before your policy started or, if mental health cover was added later, before that benefit was added.
