According to Mind UK, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year in England. Taking out a policy which includes mental health cover can help you receive the care you need should you be affected by a mental health condition in the future. Here at Freedom Health Insurance, we offer mental health cover as an additional benefit to our Freedom Elite policy, so that you and your family can access mental health services with ease.

What we will cover

The types of mental health issues we can provide cover for are ’acute’ mental or psychiatric illnesses’. These are mental or nervous disorders which impact your ability to function in significant life activities such as work.

By adding mental health care to your Freedom Elite policy, you can benefit from the following cover:

  • Fees charged for outpatient consultations with a psychiatric specialist covered in full up to a maximum of £2,000.
  • Fees charged by hospitals for inpatient and day-patient treatment given under the supervision of a psychiatric specialist - covered in full up to a maximum of 45 days.

What we will not cover

  • Treatment relating to any addictions, such as alcohol or drug abuse or conditions which have arisen as a result of addiction or drug/substance abuse.

Please note: you must add mental health care cover as an additional benefit to your Freedom Elite plan to be eligible for the cover of mental health treatments. It is not part of the core cover.

If you would like more information on what is covered and what’s excluded in our health insurance with mental health cover, please refer to our Freedom Elite Policyholder’s Guide. If you have any questions about our policies, please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team.

FAQs

What is mental health cover?

Mental health cover is an additional benefit that you can add on to our comprehensive Freedom Elite health insurance policy. It covers the treatment of acute mental and psychiatric illnesses. You will have access to private hospitals and specialists and will be covered for costs relating to inpatient, day-patient and outpatient treatment. Please refer to the Policyholder’s Guide for more information on what is included.

Does health insurance cover mental health as standard?

Not all private health insurance policies will cover mental health treatment and support. This is why it’s always important for you to familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions of a policy so that you understand what you are entitled to. Here at Freedom Health Insurance, you can add mental health cover onto our Freedom Elite core cover as an additional benefit.

Please note: if your policy includes mental health cover, it will be shown on your certificate. Before taking out a policy, please refer to our Policyholder’s Guide so that you fully understand what is and what is not covered.

Are pre-existing mental health conditions covered?

Private medical insurance is designed to provide cover for new and unexpected acute conditions which first arise after the policy start date. If you’ve had medical treatment, or even just experienced symptoms without necessarily seeing a doctor, in the past (usually the previous five years), then it is unlikely your policy will provide cover for a recurrence of this condition or any related condition.

Therefore, if you are currently experiencing mental health problems, or have done so in the past five years, it is unlikely you will be able to use the mental health care benefit provided by Freedom Elite to receive private treatment.

Cover may be available once you have completed a full, unbroken two-year period after the policy start date during which time you do not receive any medical advice, treatment, or medication, or experience any symptoms. However, mental health conditions can often last for many years and it is often the case cover will not become available because there will not be a full, unbroken two-year period with no recurrence.

If you want to include cover for mental health care on your policy, we recommend discussing your needs and circumstances with your broker before committing to your purchase.

How much is health insurance that covers mental health?

The cost of health insurance covering mental health will depend on a number of factors, such as the type of cover you choose and your age. You can find out more about how much private health insurance costs or get a quote online today.

Does the NHS provide mental health treatment?

Yes, the NHS does provide mental health services which any person who is ordinarily resident in the UK can access. Whilst you can access these services for free, you may choose to invest in private health insurance that covers mental health as this will cut the time you have to wait to be seen and will benefit from treatment in private hospitals.
