What’s the difference between international medical insurance and travel insurance?

There is often confusion surrounding medical insurance and travel insurance. Here are some of the main differences between the two:

  • Who it is designed for - travel insurance is a short-term insurance plan (less than a year) for people going on holiday or on short trips abroad. On the other hand, international medical insurance is designed to offer cover for those who live and work abroad for prolonged periods of time (over 12 months).

  • What it covers - travel insurance usually offers protection for trip cancellations, loss of possessions (such as luggage) and emergency medical treatment. In contrast, global health insurance can cover treatment for routine healthcare (not just emergency treatments) amongst other medical treatments depending on the level of cover their policy provides.
